Additional Information

Description

Edward Wohl has worked with wood all his life, but he began his formal career in architecture, receiving a bachelor’s from Washington University in St. Louis. In 1967, he moved to Madison, Wisconsin, and worked as a draftsman for a short period before enrolling in a graduate design program with a focus on ergonomics at the University of Wisconsin. While there, he met industrial designer Bill Stumpf, today best known as co-designer of the renowned Aeron Chair. Wohl worked with Stumpf making models, prototypes and furniture for nearly 40 years, absorbing a level of design and craftsmanship that he wouldn’t have learned from anyone else in the world. In 1990, after 20 years of producing his own exceptional furniture, which another woodworker likened to “fairy’s work,” he began to produce cutting boards on the side. “I’m delighted to be making a functional and affordable piece that can also be hung on the wall and viewed as a piece of sculpture,” says Wohl of each one. The Edward Wohl Cutting Board (1990) is crafted by joining sections from a single piece of carefully selected bird’s-eye maple, so the wood tone and figuring are consistent throughout. Each is precision-shaped and beveled for graceful shape and balance, then sanded and oiled by hand. Treat occasionally with mineral oil. Made in U.S.A.
