Description

DWR Exclusive

Detroit natives Jerome and Evelyn Ackerman moved to Los Angeles in 1952 with the goal of producing their own ceramics. “We had very little money, but we had a dream and each other – and a willingness to work hard,” Evelyn said. After founding Jenev Design Studio (“Jenev” is a combination of their first names: “Je” and “Ev”), Jerome spent a year devising shapes, molds and glazes. In 1953, he began slip-casting and firing his creations, with Evelyn decorating some of them. By 1958, they had expanded into mosaics, tapestries, woodcarvings and hardware. The couple eventually stopped producing their award-winning ceramics as Evelyn focused on design and Jerry on sales and management. The six pieces in the Jenev Collection (1953/2017) were selected from Jerome’s 16 original designs and made with molds meticulously copied from his masters, with glazes formulated to match his signature matte finishes. “When I look at the Jenev ceramic designs today,” he says, “they hold up, and I’m proud of that.” Made in China.

  • Jenev ceramics were included in The Wall Street Journal 2017 Holiday Gift Guide of 50 Rare Finds.

Evelyn was charmed. “I would have married Jerry the first time I met him,” she recalled. And ...
