Since 1921, “the Dream Factory,” as the family-run Alessi company is known, has been bringing creativity and technology to the objects we use every day. Alberto Alessi’s grandfather, Giovanni Alessi, founded the family-owned and operated company near Lake Orta in the foothills of the Italian Alps, an area known for highly developed craft traditions in wood and metal. Alberto’s father, Carlo Alessi, took over the company in the 1950s, and designed many of the iconic products for which Alessi is known today. It was also under Carlo’s leadership that the company began to commission products from outside designers, and it was through this strategy that Alberto Alessi, who has been the president of the company since 1970, brought the company to the forefront of international design. In 2010, Alberto Alessi received the distinguished Collab Design Excellence Award from the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
