Mary Cordaro is a healthy home expert and certified bau-biologist ("building biologist") who backed into her career when she needed a solution to help her sleep. Suffering from asthma and allergies triggered by her environment, Cordaro educated herself on the biological effects of buildings on the human body, and used her own home as her laboratory.

Born in Los Angeles, Cordaro got an MA in education at San Francisco State College in 1981. In the late 1980s she began serious research into the ways in which her environment was affecting her health, which led her to the field of bau-biology. Originating in Germany and Switzerland, "bau-biology" is essentially the study of how buildings impact life. "I became fascinated with the idea of the built environment as a complex system or organism, the physics of a building," says Cordaro. "The interrelationships among our biological health, the health of the home and the health of the planet." In 1992, she became certified as a bau-biologist from the International Institute for Bau-Biology and Ecology in Clearwater, Florida.

Cordaro drastically renovated her own home into a healthier space that helps her feel and breathe easier. This experience led her to take on clients looking for guidance in this process. In 2000, she founded H3Environmental – an umbrella organization for all facets of her business, including her line of mattresses and bedding that are made from 100% natural and organic materials. Following the principles of bau-biology, Cordaro believes that healthy living, first and foremost, begins in the bedroom, and she encourages her clients to start there. In her research and experience, she has found a consistent overlap between those things that are good for the environment and good for human health, and her line of mattresses and bedding reflect that sense of stewardship.

A passionate advocate for an environmentally friendly lifestyle and those who suffer from chemical sensitivities, Cordaro has continuously worked to spread her message throughout the U.S. market. She is affiliated with the American Indoor Air Quality Council, the Association for Women in Architecture and the Organic Trade Association. She has taught at UCLA and lectures at the Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine in Arizona and for the National Sustainable Building Advisor Program in Santa Monica, California.
