Nilus de Matran founded Nilus Designs in 1997. He relocated to San Francisco in 1989, after completing his studies in London at Architectural Association, where he studied extensively with Zaha Hadid and Peter Wilson.
Nilus Designs is an interdisciplinary design office that handles both commercial and residential projects of varying sizes and scope. Residential projects and renovations have been covered extensively in feature cover articles for Metropolitan Home, Dwell and San Francisco Magazine. His work has also appeared in Metropolis, Interiors and California Home and Garden. He has appeared in two different segments on HGTV, each focusing on a recently completed, urban residential project.
Commercial projects include the master planning of a new technology campus located at the historic Shenandoah Plaza at Moffett Field, as well as the regional headquarters for a technology company, numerous restaurants and retail stores, commercial photography studios and art galleries. Nilus Designs has been involved in an international collaboration for a series of global, institutional retreats. The studio also focuses on fixtures, furniture design and workstations, and most recently, kitchen systems for Design Within Reach.
Nilus is an active member of the architecture and art community. He is on the advisory board of AIA SF, Art & Film for Teenagers and the nonprofit artist-run Southern Exposure. As an artist, Nilus has exhibited his paintings and photography all over the Bay Area. Click here to see DWR: Kitchen, designed by Nilus de Matran.
