Interiors: Standish

“Living in New York, we know that sometimes you need a break from the city,” says Yaiza, “so we turned the focus inward to make it about the nucleus of the home.” Repetition of color was crucial in encouraging exploration and creating a fluid connection between spaces. Yaiza also paid attention to what you see from one area to the next. In the hall, you get a glimpse of a chocolate leather headboard in the bedroom, which tempts your curiosity and gives you an idea of the serenity within.

As for the furniture selected, Yaiza is a master at blending old with new. “Most people are visually familiar with the classics – Eames, Prouvé, Mies and Corbusier – that DWR is known for, and it was fun to mix those with DWR’s lesser-known pieces that also have a timeless quality to them but could be considered a recent discovery. For example, the organic shape of the Pedrera Coffee Table is a nice counterpoint to the clean lines of the new Lispenard Sofa from Herman Miller.”

“Speaking of coffee tables, Yaiza advises not to go too large. “It may look nice in the space but it distances people. It’s awkward to have a conversation across a giant table. Likewise, for dining tables and chairs, scale is incredibly important. A set of chairs that are too large will overpower a table quickly.”

When asked how interior designers can help clients create homes they love, Yaiza describes her job as “being an editor and a source of inspiration. Your home is so personal. I tap into who my clients are and help them find themselves.”

ABOUT ATELIER ARMBRUSTER

Atelier Armbruster is a Manhattan-based design office focusing on minimal and modern designs that cater to the unique nature of each project. This is a firm that knows how to navigate the line between hard-edge modernism and warm, serene spaces. Whether renovating a residential or commercial space, the firm always finds a way to incorporate the historical features of the building.

The firm was founded in 2010 by Yaiza A. Armbruster, who trained as an architect and engineer in her native city of Munich, Germany, and spent six years as a designer at Selldorf Architects. Yaiza credits her strong understanding of space and attention to detail to her German education.

In every project, Yaiza and her team are guided by one unwavering belief: Spaces have to work for the people who live or work in them.
