After an eBay auction turned up a chair made by Emeco in 1951, the company decided to bring it back into production. However, since it was originally made for Navy hospitals, the chair needed a few modifications. Emeco invited Adrian van Hooydonk and his team at BMW Group DesignworksUSA to join the project. In the same way that the original Mini Cooper relates to the new Mini, everyone was in favor of maintaining the original 1951 Chair’s simple utilitarian style and aluminum construction, but the lines and surfaces had to be reconsidered. They also wanted to expand the collection to include a Counter Stool and Barstool. Slightly reshaped, the new 1951 Collection (2005) has more “attitude” and a frame that's stackable for storage (chair stacks to 6 high or 10-12 with dolly). New materials include durable molded ABS plastic and 80% recycled aluminum. The 1951 in white is suitable for outdoor use. Made in U.S.A.
