A distant relative of horseshoes and a kissing cousin of bocce, the game of petanque originated in Provençe. Literally translated, petanque means “stuck feet” (pés tanqués), as it requires a player to keep the feet planted during a lob. Because enjoying cool aperitifs and tasty hors d’oeuvres during matches are as much part of the game as the rules, petanque is fast catching on among leisure hunters.
