Bauhaus Chessmen 32 pcs
A master craftsman in the Bauhaus wood-carving workshop, sculptor Josef Hartwig became best known for his architectural chess set. Taking a literal approach to form following function, his Bauhaus Chessmen (1924) are solid maple shapes which mimic the moves each piece is permitted to take – for example, the bishop is shaped like an “x” to indicate it can move diagonally forward or backward. Produced in exacting detail to Hartwig’s original design, the Chessmen come neatly packaged in a beech wood case that includes instructions and a history of the design. Part of the Museum of Modern Art’s permanent collection. The solid maple Chessboard is sold separately. Made in Switzerland.
