Saarinen Side Table
In a 1956 cover story in
Time
magazine, Eero Saarinen said he was designing a collection to "clear up the slum of legs in the U.S. home." Later that year, he completed his Pedestal Table and Tulip Chair Collection and obliterated the "slum" by creating a cast aluminum base inspired by a drop of high-viscosity liquid. These pieces went into production in 1957, and to celebrate their 50th Anniversary, every table ordered between August 1, 2007 and August 1, 2008 will ship with an anniversary medallion and a commemorative edition of the certificate of authenticity. Also honoring the occasion is a new base color, platinum, which, like the black or white options, has an abrasion-resistant rilsan finish. Pedestal Tables come in a variety of materials (veneer, marble and laminate) and sizes (side, coffee and 35"-96" dining tables.)
Each piece is stamped with the KnollStudio logo and the designer's signature. This table is manufactured by Knoll; according to the original and exacting specifications of the designer. Made in Italy.

Eero Saarinen
Although Eero Saarinen made his reputation in the United States following World War II, he had his roots in Europe. Until 1923, he lived in Finland with his mother, textile artist Loja Saarinen, and his father, the renowned architect and town planner, Eliel Saarinen. For Eero, architecture was a discipline like the fine arts, and in particular, sculpture. He called himself a "form giver" and everything he designed had a strong sculptural quality.
Saarinen began his career as a student at Yale University...
