Lady Chair - Houndstooth Fabric
A terrific example of sensual modern, the Lady Chair (1951) came about when Arflex, a division of Pirelli, wanted to design seating with foam rubber upholstery, and commissioned Marco Zanuso. The Italian designer was already helping to shape the ideals of the modern design movement by having his work featured in the 1948 Low-Cost Furniture competition sponsored by the MoMA. Through his work with Arflex, he became an even greater influence with the introduction of his Lady Chair. Awarded first prize at the 1951 Milan Triennial, the Lady Chair was a triumph for the new material, latex foam. With which, Zanuso wrote, "one could revolutionize not only the system of upholstery but also the structural manufacturing and formal potential." The Lady Chair had contours never before seen in a chair, with the potential for production with industrial standards and market accessibility previously unimaginable. Today, Arflex still manufactures this nicely scaled, comfortable chair. Made in Italy.
