Matera Six Drawer Dresser

Created exclusively for DWR, the Matera Six Drawer Dresser (2007) shares the clean lines of the entire collection, which are thoughtfully finished with beveled edges, running match walnut grain and exposed mortise and tenon joints. The full-extension, handle-free drawers open by pulling from the top, and all of the drawers in the collection have self-closing vacuum glides that refuse to slam shut. “I don’t have pictures of sexy models on my walls,” says Matera designer Sean Yoo, “I have pictures of sexy chairs from DWR catalogs.” The fact that the young designer credits DWR with helping him get his education in design makes the introduction of this collection even more special.

-Case frames and rails are made from ‘thick section’ solid Walnut, instead of thinner pieces glued together to make up a thick piece. This is a more stable construction process as there are no glue lines that could potentially crack or delaminate. The end-grain of the wood is clearly visible at all joints, showing the wood is solid all the way through!

-Corner joints of case frames are “exposed mortise and tenon” joints – beautiful and very strong.

-Veneered MDF is used as it will not shrink and expand due to seasonal air moisture changes, compared to solid wood over large surfaces that would likely crack. Also, it is used for economy of materials – using solid wood in these applications is unnecessary and wasteful of expensive Walnut. This is standard practice for high-end solid wood furniture.

-Finish is a special combination of highly durable clear ‘catalyzed lacquer’ with furniture wax applied over top. The catalyzed lacquer gives the best long term protection to the wood, but the wax top-coat means minor scratches can easily be repaired by simply wiping are scratches vigorously to heat the wax around it and blend back in. Subsequently layers of wax can be applied over the life of the product to main the soft luster of the present finish.

-Drawer fronts and made from two continuous boards edge-glued together to make wide panels. These are glued with a ‘zig-zag’ finger joint, that virtually eliminates the chance of any differential moisture related wood movement between the two boards which could possibly split – these are extremely strong.

-Drawer slides are ‘Blum’ German made ‘self closing’ / ‘soft-close’ “vacuum slides”, mounted underneath for maximum strength, smoothness, and non-visible. These are the best slides available in the industry. They close themselves and have a breaking mechanism to avoid the drawers from ever slamming shut. If you try to slam the drawer shut it will stop about 1” from close and slowly close itself.
