Their Aluminum Group Collection (1958) began as a special project for Eero Saarinen and Alexander Girard, who needed seating for a house they were designing for J. Irwin Miller. Shifting from the idea of a chair as a solid shell, the Eameses combined newly affordable aluminum with a sling seat that subtly conforms to the body’s shape. “We have to take pleasure seriously,” said Charles Eames.
