Christian Bjørn has been a major force in Danish industrial design since the 1970s. His company, CBD, has continuously expanded since its founding in 1974, and now has offices in Denmark, China and Vietnam. His interdisciplinary approach to design has been applied to everything from faucets and lighting to tableware and a speedboat. His signature passion for functional design is evident in his Lighthouse Outdoor Torch (2008) collection. “It doesn’t burn with just a little flame,” exclaims the designer, “it burns like a fantastic bonfire.” Inspired by Scandinavian lighthouses, the Torches are a clean and modern answer to kitschy (albeit useful) tiki torches. The patented oil burner, which is easy to fill with either standard lamp oil or citronella, offers a steady, strong flame, even in windy conditions. Red Dot Design Award winner 2008.
