Akari Square Lantern Table Lamp
The son of a well-known Japanese poet and an American writer, Isamu Noguchi grew up in the tumult of WWII, during which he often shuffled between the U.S. and Japan. Simultaneously influenced by Eastern tradition and Western innovation, Noguchi's work bridges the cultures and artistic heritages of Japan, the U.S. and Europe like no other artist of his generation. Some of his most famous expressions of sculpture as a practical part of daily life, the Akari Lamps merge spirit and substance in light and form. Inferior copies of the lamps are widely available, but these genuine models, imprinted with the Noguchi signature and logo, are incomparable. Bulb (not included): Incandescent 40W/120V/E26/A19-4PK.

This puzzle, posed both by Europeans like Giacometti and Brancusi and the Zen artists of Japan, creates a theme that runs through the work of Isamu Noguchi. It is not one he attempted to solve, but like the Zen master, posed the question in different ways.
One of the great sculptors of the 20th century, Noguchi created "lived spaces" for the theater, interiors gardens and playgrounds. He also sought to bring sculptural qualities to the many objects he designed for common use. As a young man, Noguchi studied medicine at Columbia University, but abandoned medicine to pursue painting and sculpture and in 1927, a Guggenheim fellowship took him to Europe.
