Seeing an opportunity for a simplified task lamp, designer James Irvine created his w082t LED Lamp (2008) without knobs or hinges. Instead, this lamp can be directed in a variety of ways by turning any of the three pivot points, which are located at the base, in the middle and at the head. “It does move,” says Irvine, “but it does not do everything. For me that’s enough and for some other people too.” The Irvine Lamp is dimmable and the warm white light is produced by LEDs with glare-protecting optical lenses and a diffuser. The shape of the head helps dissipate the heat produced by the LEDs, which in turn extends the life of the bulbs. To save on packing materials, it ships flat packed; simple assembly required. With no internalized cord, all three pivot points can spin 360º.
