Paulistano Armchair - Slipcover
A Brazilian version of a Bauhaus classic, Paulo Mendes da Rocha¹s Paulistano Chair (1957) is a piece that holds its own with the iconic cantilevered armchairs from Alvar Aalto, Mart Stam, Mies van der Rohe and other European classics. Details that make a difference are the signature of this architect, who won the Pritzker Architecture Prize in 2006. Exceptionally comfortable, the Paulistano flexes slightly and can be adjusted for upright or relaxed sitting positions by shifting the sling up or down the frame. The sling, or slipcover, is available in leather or fabric, the latter being a limited-edition reversible cover (one side is floral, the other is striped) by Rosita Missoni. The frame (sold separately) is a continuous 17-foot piece of solid steel, shaped under 200 lbs of hydraulic pressure and welded in a single spot. The frame is available in polished stainless steel or phosphatized carbon steel. The Paulistano Chair was not available in the U.S. market until 2006.
