The collaboration between Maharam and British fashion designer Paul Smith could be attributed to Gio Ponti. After all, it was because of seeing a silk pattern designed by the prolific Italian designer at a career retrospective that Smith approached Maharam for permission to use it as a lining for his menswear jackets. Shortly after, he began using archival Maharam textiles in his accessories collection, and a collaboration on an upholstery collection quickly followed. For his Epingle Stripe (2010) pattern for Maharam, Smith embellished on his signature stripe, designing a soft, durable textile of multicolored loop and pile stripes. Its epingle and velour bindings create a textured wale, almost as if a soft wire was inserted into each stripe. This fabric offers reduced environmental impact and is Greenguard Children and Schools(sm) certified for low chemical and particle emissions and may contribute to LEED certification. This fully licensed fabric is produced by Maharam Design Studio according to the designer's specifications.
