Matégot Coatrack
Designed by Mathieu Matégot
Though he spent only a decade designing furniture, Mathieu Matégot had a profound effect on European mid-century design. A material pioneer – he was the first designer to combine metal tubing with perforated sheet metal – he nonetheless devoted most of his career to set design and tapestries. Born in Hungary, Matégot adopted France as his home country in 1931 at the age of 20. This independent, self-taught designer has been named alongside Serge Mouille, Jean Prouvé and Charlotte Perriand as a true innovator of French modernism. His Coatrack (1950s) uses powder-coated steel tubing and a modernist color palette to create an iconic, distinctly mid-century design. Like much of his work, it’s ideally suited to small spaces. Matégot was directly involved with both the manufacture and distribution of his pieces. Gubi, who recently brought the Matégot Coatrack back into production, has honored this legacy by maintaining the designer’s specific and exacting specifications. Made in Denmark.
