John Caldwell is quick to admit that he's had a lot of luck in his design life, but anyone who sells a design to Brown Jordan at the age of 19, has to have a handful of talent to boot. His Silver Collection Tray Table (1999) acts a convenient occasional table. The removable teak tray creates a serving surface for cocktails or outdoor dining. This entire collection uses teak harvested from managed plantations where renewal of this valuable resource is assured. The teak is kiln-dried and left unfinished for a low maintenance natural surface that will acquire a silvery patina over time. (While this appears to be the source of the collection's name, in truth, the Silver Collection was named for Caldwell's manufacturer, a company that celebrated its silver anniversary at the time these pieces were first produced.) In 1999, this commercial-quality collection received the Pinnacle Award, presented by the American Society of Furniture Designers.
