Inspired by the simplicity and utility found in a pair of serving tongs, designer Peter Stathis created his Tube Top Lamp (2006). The satisfying composition features a transparent acrylic base that supports a lightweight mesh shade held in place by tension. The effect is that of a floating form over a barely visible base, tethered only by a fabric-covered cord. A full-range dimmer switch provides a range of lighting options. The Tube Top Lamp is available in small and medium, in a scale that encourages mixing sizes for an interesting display. Peter Stathis' work is included in the permanent collections of the Cranbrook Art Museum, the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum and the MoMA in New York.
