Spindle Chair
Designed by Craig Bassam for BassamFellows
Architect Craig Bassam and his partner Scott Fellows are BassamFellows, described as “the design world’s A-team” by The Times of London. Their Spindle Chair (2012) was inspired by a trip to Phillips Exeter Academy Library – the brainchild of renowned architect Louis Kahn – in Exeter, New Hampshire. “Kahn paired a very traditional spindle chair with his powerful modern architecture,” says Bassam. “The contrast was simultaneously jarring and sublime.” By taking that design tension and applying it to a chair, Bassam has brought a new approach to the spindle archetype. The ergonomically shaped seat and streamlined back are supported by spindles rendered in metal rather than the traditional wood, giving the chair a sophisticated, airy feel and creating the illusion of two surfaces floating in space. The Spindle Chair is finished with a wipe-on combination of oil and sealer. No stains are ever used, and because of the natural variations in wood, every chair is unique. Made in U.S.A.
