Step outside the digital realm. The Clam Shell Alarm Clock evokes a time when travel was a little more glamorous and mobile phones were the stuff of science fiction. This pop-up portable clock has rounded corners and a spring-loaded hinge, which pops up with the push of a button. Echoing the lines and style of mid-century timekeepers, it has classic black, white and silver coloration. It’s crafted by the Howard Miller company. Howard C. Miller (son of Herman) founded Howard Miller in 1926, making clocks of “incomparable workmanship and unsurpassed quality.” The company still crafts timepieces with the same philosophy and dedication. Runs on one LR44 battery.

The Wild-Harvested Sachets are made from nothing except either sage from the central coast of California or trimmings from Douglas fir trees in the Pacific Northwest. The Big Sur Sage Sachet offers a refreshing smell that cleans the air and clear the mind, while the Douglas Fir Sachet offers a relaxing and woodsy aroma. Neatly stowed in an organic cotton bag, it’s easy to slip a Sachet into a dresser drawer, the car, under a pillow and anywhere else that would benefit from a clean, natural scent. The Sachets are made by Juniper Ridge, a company dedicated to the preservation of the natural world in the Western United States. They never kill the plants from which they harvest materials for their products and they donate 10% of all sales to wildlife preservation efforts. The strength of the Sachet’s aroma will gradually subside over time. Made in U.S.A.

Useful for its ability to hold a wide range of notions, the Felt Basket is kind to walls and tabletops and won’t bruise or nick adjacent surfaces in the event of a bump. While utilitarian storage has its merits, this item’s soft architectural presence furthers its appeal. When not it use, it can be folded into a more compact shape for storage. The 100% wool construction is naturally dirt and flame resistant.

Japanese designer Yumiko Sekine uses raw linen from Lithuania to create the Fog Linen Slippers, which get softer with age. Characterized by basic, functional shapes, there's an honest simplicity to
Sekine's work, which is also reflected in how the Fog Linen Collection began. When Sekine had her first small apartment, she decided to make herself a few things, like an apron and a cover for her teapot. When she moved to a larger apartment, she needed a few more things, like a kitchen cloth and pot holder. Basically, every time Sekine moved to a larger space, her Fog Linen Collection grew, adapting to fit her household needs. Available in medium and large.

The Horizontal Shoe Rack (2004) is a wall-mounted solution for organizing shoes. The simple design gives footwear the appearance of floating in air, and by taking shoes off the floor it simplifies the process of sweeping or vacuuming underneath. The design is the work of brothers Mark and Jamie, who together founded the London-based design studio J-Me. Both are graduates of Central St. Martins College where they studied product design. The brothers share a drive to take user interaction beyond the basic function of a product, but they are radically different in how they get there. Jamie is the thinker, and the source for a never-ending stream of new ideas. "Routine kills the mind," he says. Mark on the other hand, is the producer. For him, "turning thoughts into a physical reality is the most satisfying and self-fulfilling feeling." As a duo, they work quite well. Jamie comes up with the idea; Mark makes it happen. The Horizontal Shoe Rack is crafted of brushed stainless steel.

This Shoe Rack can be quickly removed from an entryway, but storage isn’t the goal with products made by Side by Side. Instead, this well-resolved form is designed to be left out in the open rather than hidden in the closet. Able to hold 9-12 pairs of shoes, this Shoe Rack simply leans against a wall, and its rubber pads product adjacent surfaces and prevent sliding. An aluminum shoehorn is included. Based in Germany, Side by Side is a nonprofit mentoring program that matches a craftsperson with a mentally or physically disabled apprentice to create a team that brings a designer’s work to fruition. These workshops are subsidized by various welfare organizations in Germany, so that all profits can go directly to the people handcrafting these products. Side by Side is successfully fulfilling two missions: To create modern, useful objects and to bring a social environment and professionalism to a wider portion of the community.

For use as a coat rack, drying rack or exposed closet, the Cosine Clothing Rack (1993) is crafted from smooth-textured maple wood, which will patina over time. It’s treated only with an all-natural vegetable oil-based finish that preserves the features of the wood, while letting it breathe. With a compact footprint, the Rack has simple “A” shape that’s held in place by a beige leather strip at the base. The Clothing Rack is made by Cosine – a Japanese company based in Asahikawa, Hokkaido, an area known for its wood-crafted furniture. Cosine was initially started to up-cycle wood remnants from the furniture industry. They still use only natural wood to design their simply crafted items that continue to improve with age.

Inspired by a simple paperclip, designer Tom Dixon hand welded stainless steel to create his Wire Coatrack (2003). The sculptural form is made with generous ellipses that facilitate the casual draping and hanging of garments, hats and bags. Sold in two-foot sections, the Wire Coatrack is infinitely extendable, and can even be installed around corners. The welding skills demonstrated in the design of this item aren't the result of art school (Dixon dropped out after six months), but rather the self-taught necessity of a motorcycle enthusiast. Dixon's bike has landed him in the hospital twice, with one stay around three months, and it was during these recuperations that Dixon began toying with design to occupy his time. A man who is always challenging norms, Dixon is recognized as one of the UK's most influential product designers. His work includes furniture, lighting and accessories, as well as interior and architectural schemes. Dixon was nominated for the Design Museum's 2005 Designer of the Year. Wall plugs (not included) are necessary for drywall installation.

What appears to be a bundle of sticks is really Konstantin Grcic’s stripped-down, yet highly functional, Hut Ab Collapsible Coatrack (1997). Constructed of solid unfinished ash, the poles’ notched ends make them ideal for clothes, hangers and bags. The Coatrack’s tall stature allows overcoats, dusters and draped scarves to stretch out. In warm months, it can be folded and stored in a minimum of space. Hats off. (Or “hut ab” as they say in Germany.)

Available with either a mocha wood finish, or in bold multiple colors, the Twist adds a sensuous and playful touch to a modern interior. Designers Christoph Burtscher and Patrizia Bertolini are based in Italy, where they've collaborated since the early '90s. Assembly required. Made in Italy.

In their early experiments in molded plywood, Charles and Ray Eames were intrigued to see if they could create structures stable enough to stand. This idea soon became reality in a portable, foldable way to divide space, known as the Molded Plywood Folding Screen (1946).

Like the other pieces in the collection, the Matera Mirror (2007) showcases the beauty of solid walnut grain and the timelessness of simple, modern framework. Designed to adapt to your individual needs, the Mirror can be placed on the floor rest on the wall at a slight angle. At the top and bottom of the mirrored glass is a purposeful gap where it would normally meet the frame. This gives the mirror a lightness and a space for “breathing,” a design feature you will also encounter in the Matera Bed and Matera Bed with Storage. The walnut frame is thoughtfully finished with beveled edges, running match wood grain and exposed mortise and tenon joints. “I don’t have pictures of sexy models on my walls,” says Matera’s designer Sean Yoo, “I have pictures of sexy chairs from DWR catalogs.” The fact that this young designer credits DWR with helping him get his education in design makes the introduction of this collection even more special.

While most of us can appreciate the added convenience of a conventional three-way mirror, few would choose this ubiquitous dressing room piece for their homes. The Bellavista Mirror (2004) by Carlo Marelli and Massimo Molteni is an exception, designed to live in even the most intimate of living spaces, including bedrooms, living areas and entryways. With three hinged panels, the wall-mounted Bellavista can close for complete concealment behind solid ash wood doors. When open, these doors can be adjusted to provide reflections from multiple angles. High-quality aluminum hardware provides smooth opening and closing. Simple bracket system enables secure stud-mounting. Made in Italy.

While most mirrors occupy a single plane of space, the Four Seasons Mirror is presented dramatically in three dimensions. Inset in a nearly 5" deep wenge-stained ash box frame, the mirror face is echoed by four smaller mirrors along the box's interior perimeter. This provides an unusual degree of visual complexity, as multiple planes of space are subtly refracted without disturbing the large, placid mirror surface. Adding an architectural touch to a room or commercial space, the Four Seasons can be hung vertically or horizontally.
