Traditional table lamp materials of linen and brass are given a light scale and modernist shape in the Kiosk Table Lamp (2008). Inspired by classic mid-century Danish lighting, Kiosk has a solid matte brass frame that holds the tall oval shade in place. The 100% linen shade has a styrene backing to offer ambient, diffuse light. Felt pads on the bottom of the frame’s legs protect tabletop surfaces. Kiosk was designed to be placed on a credenza, side table or desk, and it is equally well suited for next to a bed or sofa. Includes an in-line dimmer. Bulbs (not included): two incandescent 60W.

A graceful interplay of proportion and material, the Baton Table Lamp (2008) was designed to illuminate interiors from traditional to modern. The columnar base has Italian Carrera marble on the bottom, contrasting with American walnut on top. The 100% linen shade is secured with solid brass fittings and seems to float above the comparatively heavy base. With its variety of materials, the Baton was inspired by mid-century Danish wood and ceramic table lamps. Includes an in-line dimmer. UL listed. Bulb (not included): one incandescent 100W.

Inspired by the simplicity and utility found in a pair of serving tongs, designer Peter Stathis created his Tube Top Lamp (2006). The satisfying composition features a transparent acrylic base that supports a lightweight mesh shade held in place by tension. The effect is that of a floating form over a barely visible base, tethered only by a fabric-covered cord. A full-range dimmer switch provides a range of lighting options. The Tube Top Lamp is available in small and medium, in a scale that encourages mixing sizes for an interesting display. Peter Stathis' work is included in the permanent collections of the Cranbrook Art Museum, the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum and the MoMA in New York. Bulb (included): one white incandescent 60W/120V/ G16.5/Candelabra base. Made in U.S.A.

Vico Magistretti’s Alega Table Lamp (1970) has become an icon of modern lighting. In Alega, the traditional table lamp shape is made more compelling by a play of contrasts and negative space. The translucent base is made from crystal and attaches to the glossy white shade with chrome hardware. Alega is a fully licensed light that is made by a family-run Italian company, whose Murano glass-making heritage dates back to the 16th century.

Made from LEDs and recyclable aluminum, Pablo Pardo’s innovative Brazo Table Lamp (2006) is the first LED task light to feature an optical film lens for focus control, providing both a variable beam spread and focused directional light. In the shape of an inverted “L,” Brazo’s top arm lets you turn an outer aluminum layer over the white LEDs to focus the light as much or as little as is desired. This energy-efficient lighting solution is 97% recyclable.

The top piece freely rotates and also tilts up to 90 degrees.

Height adjustable with a dimmer knob.

Uses 18 high-output LEDs, which have an estimated life of 20 years with normal use.

The simple, svelte Brazo won the 2007 Best of Competition Award at the Neocon Contract Furniture Exposition – a first for a lighting design.

“It’s about gravity and non-gravity,” writes designer Jean-Marie Massaud about his w083t LED Lamp (2008), which balances on a bowl-shaped base that rests on a magnetic platform. While this base stays securely in place, the arm of the lamp spins 360 degrees to cast warm white light where its needed on the table or desk. To turn the Massaud Lamp on or off, simply wave your hand over the infrared switch on the base. While LED lamps are energy efficient (this lamp consumes only three watts of energy) they do produce a fair amount of heat. To solve this problem, Massaud made the stem without any joints, so the heat naturally dissipates down the lamp, away from the bulbs, and the lamp stays cool to the touch.

This sophisticated reading lamp draws a mere five watts of energy and delivers an intense, warm and pleasing light for an average duration of some 50,000 hours (2,000 hours is the average for a normal halogen bulb). Adding to the energy-efficient capabilities, the Mix Task Lamp (2005) uses LED chip-on-board technology that gives the user the ability to adjust the color of the light from warm to cool by sliding a screen located on the underside of the head. When the lamp is switched off, the profile of the lamp head is illuminated with a blue light, making it easy to find in the dark. Adding to the sleek look is a flexible stem that extends from the satisfying S-curve base and provides the utility of directing the light where needed.

The design team Claesson Koivisto Rune believes that in order for a technical lamp to be successful, it must be self-explanatory to anyone who uses it. Thus, their w081t2 Lamp (2008) can be quickly repositioned with one hand, simply by grabbing hold of the handle that comes out of the middle of the adjustable head. Inspired by surgical lamps, the three designers studied these medical devices and devised a way to eliminate shadows created by the handle. The lamp’s warm white light is produced by LEDs with glare-protecting optical lenses and a diffuser. The light is dimmable, and the heat produced by the LEDs dissipates across the large surface of the lamphead. The arms and head pivot on smooth-gliding ball bearings, and the head also rotates left and right.

Seeing an opportunity for a simplified task lamp, designer James Irvine created his w082t LED Lamp (2008) without knobs or hinges. Instead, this lamp can be directed in a variety of ways by turning any of the three pivot points, which are located at the base, in the middle and at the head. “It does move,” says Irvine, “but it does not do everything. For me that’s enough and for some other people too.” The Irvine Lamp is dimmable and the warm white light is produced by LEDs with glare-protecting optical lenses and a diffuser. The shape of the head helps dissipate the heat produced by the LEDs, which in turn extends the life of the bulbs. To save on packing materials, it ships flat packed; simple assembly required. With no internalized cord, all three pivot points can spin 360º.

It's been called the Aeron of lamps and its controls have been compared with those on an iPod, but technology is only half of the story when it comes to the new Leaf Light. The other half is sustainability. The work of Yves Béhar for Herman Miller, the Leaf Light (2006) uses a biomorphic grid of LEDs to deliver a wide spectrum of light; from 2800 to 6000 Kelvin, to be exact, or in layman's terms, from a golden glow to pure white. The goal, says the designer, was to "allow the user to choose the intensity and color of light which best suits a functional need, mood or location." The Leaf's integrated microprocessor includes a dimmer, and the lamp remembers the user's settings each time it's turned on. Highly adjustable, the sculptural Leaf has two blades that independently rotate and pivot. The Leaf Light was designed according to Herman Miller's demanding Design for the Environment (DfE) protocol, which emphasizes sustainability and recyclable materials. The manufacturing of Leaf uses a stamping process which eliminates waste. Its LEDs use 40% less energy than compact fluorescent lights, and carry a lifespan up to 100,000 hours.

Peter Stathis’ Link LED Task Lamp (2008) is designed for movement. With vibrant colors and bold shapes, it infuses any workspace with a sense of playful animation. Sitting firmly on an L-shaped base, Link has a 360-degree swivel, as well three different pivot points, offering a full range of motion (and an L-shaped key is stored under the base for tightening the joints if necessary). The circular head holds 15 high-power LEDs and features on-board technology that keeps the LEDs cool and provides uniform light. Link’s accessible price point belies its smart, eco-friendly design – it’s manufactured according to the cradle to cradle protocol. Modeled on the earth’s natural ecosystems, cradle to cradle has an emphasis on components that are intended to be reused for equally viable products. Link’s LEDs use only 7.5 watts of energy and are estimated to last 20,000 hours.
