If you combined the work of I.M. Pei and Eero Saarinen, the result might very well look like the Platner Collection (1966). Warren Platner worked with both of the industrial and organic design giants before turning his attention to steel wire furniture, for which he devised the structure and production method. Requiring as many as 1,000 welds and crafted out of wire and space, the Dining Table demonstrates Platner's belief that there is room in modernism "for the kind of decorative, gentle, graceful design that appeared in a period style like Louis XV." Constructed of metal components that are finished in bright nickel with a clear lacquer protective coating, the table features a clear plastic extrusion ring surrounding the base to protect floors and ensure a level tabletop. The tabletop is made of .4" thick tempered glass. The Platner Collection is Greenguard Indoor Air Quality Certified for low-emitting products. Manufactured by Knoll® according to the original and exacting specifications of the designer. Made in Italy.

Price:

The design of Eero Saarinen's Executive Armchair (1957) began more than a decade earlier, when he and Charles Eames submitted several designs to the Organic Design in Home Furnishings competition at the MoMA. The pair, who'd been friends and collaborators since meeting at Cranbrook Academy of Art, won first prize. These fluid, sculptural shapes influenced the future work of both men; for Saarinen, most notably in his Womb, Tulip and Executive chairs. The Executive was originally made of fiberglass but was later updated in polyurethane to take advantage of the technical advances in plastics. The feel of this classic seat, however, remains unchanged. The molded shell flexes slightly with the sitter and the contoured plywood seat supported by metal or wood legs. Unlike Saarinen's furniture, which was consistently sculptural in form, these fluid lines didn't appear in his architecture until the 1950s. When looking at the dome-shaped glass wall of the Kresge Auditorium at MIT, it's not a big leap to see the same shape in the back of his Executive Chair. This chair is Greenguard Indoor Air Quality Certified; for its use of low-emitting products. Manufactured by Knoll® according to the original and exacting specifications of the designer. Made in U.S.A.

In a 1956 cover story in Time magazine, Eero Saarinen said he was designing a collection to "clear up the slum of legs in the U.S. home." Later that year, he completed his Pedestal Table and Tulip™ Chair Collection (1956) and obliterated the "slum" by creating a cast aluminum base inspired by a drop of high-viscosity liquid. The platinum enamel has a clear satin finish, while the black and white frames are reinforced bonded finishes that maintain their gloss through years of use. The compact and comfortable Tulip Stool has a swivel seat with a padded cushion. Available upholstery includes éclat weave (pronounced a-clat), which was designed by weaver and printmaker Anni Albers in 1974. Beginning her career at the Bauhaus, Albers started designing for Knoll® in 1959. She originally designed éclat to be a printed textile – KnollTextiles reintroduced the fabric in 2007, with the pattern woven directly into the material.

Each piece is stamped with the KnollStudio logo and Eero Saarinen’s signature. The Saarinen Tulip Stool is a registered trademark of Knoll, Inc., manufactured by Knoll according to the original and exacting specifications of the designer. Made in Italy.

An idea was launched, but the designer had to figure out how to make the legs of metal, machine formed and ready for quick assembly. The solution turned out to be swaging, a method of using pressure to taper and curve a metal tube. Nelson had found a way to make his sculptured legs.
George Nelson began with the legs when designing his Swag Leg Group (1958). He insisted that they be made of metal and machine formed, and discovered his solution in "swaging," a method of using pressure to taper and curve a metal tube. For the Swag Leg Chair, the question became how to connect the four legs, and through Nelson's own engineering the resulting base appears deceptively simple. To create the chair shell, Nelson got permission from Charles and Ray Eames to use a patented process they developed for molding plastic. Adapting this process to suit his Swag Leg Chair, Nelson created separate shells for the chair seat and back. Originally made of fiberglass-reinforced plastic, these shells are now made with recyclable polypropylene and are consistent with the Herman Miller commitment to be a good steward of the earth's resources. The Nelson Swag Leg Chair flexes with the sitter and maintains comfortable air circulation through the opening between the seat and back. Wide, flat armrests provide a comfortable resting place for forearms.

George Nelson's Slat Bench is one of the great icons of mid-century modernism. For Herman Miller's® influential design director, utility was as important as beauty. His spare rectangular bench is proof. It serves equally well as table, platform base or seating, depending on need and situation. No wonder it's been called timeless, something this functional never dates. The slats are made of finished maple with finger-jointed legs for superior strength. We offer it in three lengths: 48", 60" and 72".

In the 1960s, Hans Wegner (pronounced veg-ner in English) softened the edges of what was typically thought of as Danish modern. Eliminating the sharpness found in other designers’ tables and chairs had an impact on aesthetics and comfort, the latter of which was paramount to this designer. The bull-nose edge on the Tondern Table (2009) is an example of this, in how it gives the table a more elegant, finished look, while also making the table edge more comfortable for diners. Another classic Wegner touch is the use of two woods: walnut and oak.

The brass trestle provides sturdy support with a minimal amount of material.

The exposed hardware is in keeping with Wegner’s belief that nothing should cover up or interfere with functionality.

Back in production and available first at Design Within Reach, we’re proud to reintroduce the Eames Molded Plastic Chairs (1950) with wooden dowel legs. Working closely with the Eames Office to create these chairs, the Michigan-based Herman Miller, Inc. reengineered the dowel base for improved strength while staying true to the Eameses’ original design. Charles and Ray Eames created the DAW (dining armchair with wood base) as a later version of the shell chair designs they created for MoMA’s 1948 International Competition for Low-Cost Furniture Design. These originals are authentic, fully licensed products of Herman Miller, Inc. Eames is a licensed trademark of Herman Miller. Made in U.S.A.

Available exclusively at DWR through November 22.

The molded shells have high, flexible backs, deep seat pockets and waterfall seat edges that reduce pressure on the backs of thighs.

Originally stamped out of metal and later fiberglass, the shells are today made of a more ecologically supportable material, recyclable polypropylene.

While the materials have evolved, the comfort of these chairs has not changed.
