An invaluable tool for the refined wine drinker, the Wine Finer has multiple ingenious uses. After uncorking your bottle, simply place the Finer inside the bottle (it will fit snugly and stay put). As wine is poured, it runs through strategically placed holes in the Finer and a screen – serving not only to catch any sediment, but to aerate the wine, eliminating the need for a decanter. But don’t even bother removing the Wine Finer, as it has a rubberized lid that will keep the wine fresh if you’re a little too flushed to finish the bottle.

Crafted in Takaoka, Japan, the Cast Iron Wrench Bottle Opener’s simple shape and material is enhanced by the playful disconnect between its form and function. Takaoka has been known for its iron and copper work since the early 17th century. Metal workers from other cities were invited to Takaoka to create religious objects for Buddhist temples, but the skills and traditions have endured long after the secularization of the town. Complete your toolbox with the Cast Iron Wrench and Pliers Bottle Openers. Made in Japan.

Using Iouseki stones and Binchotan charcoal, the Charcoal Water Pitcher creates filtered, mineral-rich water. The stones come from the mountains in Kanazawa, the capital city of Ishikawa Prefecture, on the Sea of Japan coast. The charcoal is specially prepared for potable water use, and also works as a deodorizer to create odor-free water. In place of filters that need monthly replacement and add to landfill, Iouseki stones and Binchotan charcoal last up to six months (depending on use). In addition to being an eco-friendly solution, this elegant Water Pitcher can go from fridge to table, rather than having to pour the water into a suitable serving vessel. The Water Pitcher comes with one set of Purifying Sticks and Stones; additional sets can be purchased separately.

Iouseki stones and Binchotan charcoal, when used with the Water Pitcher (sold separately), create filtered, mineral-rich water.

While this Coal Water Purifier (2006) appears black, it’s actually white charcoal, made from Japanese oak. The complex process for making white charcoal results in a hard glass-like material that’s clean to the touch (a small amount of residue is normal before its been washed) and naturally purifies water. Used in Asia for generations, Kishu Binchotan white charcoal absorbs chlorine, unpleasant tastes and odors while also infusing the water with natural minerals. Made in Japan.

Kishu Binchotan is the best grade of white charcoal for purifying water.

CO2 friendly: at the end of its useful life (approx 3 months), crush this charcoal and mix it with soil so plants can benefit from it.

Purifies water without the use of chemicals.

The Studio North Design Trays (2002) can be used in the kitchen or dining room as a platform or serving tool for all manner of objects. The set of two nest together for compact storage and the deep-set handles offer ease of carrying. Like all Studio North Design products, the Trays are crafted from an often overlooked material: forest-salvaged, old-growth Douglas fir. A straight-grained, amber-colored wood, it’s acquired through forest salvage logging, where skilled sawyers mine usable wood out of logs that have long since fallen in the forests of the Pacific Coast.
