After learning this Recliner (1912) had been discontinued, we worked with the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation to bring it back into production. Wright originally designed this Recliner, along with a Sofa that we’ve also brought back, for the William B. Greene House in Illinois. The design, which originally used a series of moveable pegs to provide various backrest angles, now has a simple sliding mechanism that allows the user to remain seated while changing positions. This Recliner is an authentic, fully licensed product of the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation.

This Recliner is engraved with a serial number and Wright’s signature.

Just like with our Jens Armchair and Ottoman, we turned to Jens Risom to lend a hand when we were looking to bring an upholstered rocker into our assortment. The Risom Rocker (2009) has a nine-button tufted back; a nod toward the classic Danish modern aesthetic that can be found in all of Risom’s work. Made in U.S.A.

Jens Risom has been a part of the DWR family from the beginning, which is why it’s appropriate that he should be involved with one of the first projects by DWR Design Studio. In 2007, we started collaborating with Risom to reintroduce the chair and ottoman he originally designed in 1949 for the Caribe Hilton Hotel in Puerto Rico. Decades have passed since this collection was in production, and Risom worked closely with us in every step of its return, from reviewing prototypes, to adjusting tiny details, to advocating cost effective changes in the manufacturing process. The Jens Chair and Ottoman (2008) look the same as the ones made in 1949, but thanks to Risom’s input, they are smarter solutions that take advantage of resources and tools that weren’t available 60 years ago. Like all of the furniture by this iconic designer, this collection has a subtle Scandinavian sensibility that works with modern and traditional settings. Shaker Settee

To create the Shaker Settee, we worked with a New York company that's been making furniture since 1807. The mill began by making two-inch planks, which were built into flat-bottom scows that ferried salt from New York to Pennsylvania. Those days are long gone, but the plank-shaped front and rear rails on this Settee tell us that this company hasn't forgotten its history. Combining Shaker and Windsor influences, this Settee takes advantage of both handcrafted and modern manufaturing techniques. The seat is slightly shaped for comfort, and the top rail neatly frames the spindles that taper toward the top to provide a visual lightness. Two adults of the three children can be comfortably seated on this piece, and the settee is well suited for use in dining, entry or waiting areas. Made in U.S.A.

English gentlemen’s clubs that were organized in the 18th and 19th centuries were notorious for having secrets and sacred rules, but one tradition that emerged for all to share is the leather club chair. Made with a patented sleeper mechanism, the Soto Sleeper Sofa (2009) is easy to open and unfold into a comfortable queen-sized sleeping surface. The length of the bed is a full 80", yet it uses 12" less space than conventional sleeper sofas. The space is saved by removing the gap that many sleep sofas have between the mattress and the back of the sofa, which also solves the problem of your pillow falling into that gap while you sleep. What’s also unique about Soto is that the apron of the sofa actually moves with the mattress, giving the open sleeper the finished look of an actual bed. The sleeping surface is based on a European platform bed, and consists of a high-density 4" foam mattress that rests entirely on a wooden platform, which means you won’t feel the sturdy crossbar underneath.

Armed with experience designing ergonomic in-flight seating for Northwest Airlines, Bernett took us on willingly. He designed the Flight Recliner, in collaboration with Nicholas Dodziuk, to have none of the bulkiness or macho pretense of a traditional recliner.
