Winner of a furniture competition at the Århus School of Architecture in Denmark in 1999, Flemming Busk’s Twilight Sleep Sofa distills the concept of a convertible couch to a simple cylinder and rectangle. A compact and nicely scaled sofa, the bolster pillow adjusts to three different positions for customized seat depths (19.5"/23"/34.75") and lumbar support. The Twilight offers further options by converting into a daybed, queen-size bed or two twin beds. To transform Twilight into a comfortable sleeping space for two, simply move the bolster out of the way and place the top cushion on the floor. The two mattresses, when pushed together are larger than a queen-size bed, but not quite as large as a king. For sheets, use two twin extra-long fitted sheets with coordinating flat sheets or one king-size flat sheet. A great small space solution, Twilight turns any room into a guest room. The slipcover is removable for cleaning and is welted at the seams with contrast piping for a clean aesthetic. Casters on the rear legs make for easy mobility. Made in Denmark.

The American Modern Chaise (2008) is inpired by George Nelson’s iconic design for a daybed that he created in 1948. Nelson’s work – whether designing clocks, lamps or furniture – expressed his desire to “do much more with much less.” Still true to Nelson’s straightforward design aesthetic, we’ve made updates to take advantage of today’s manufacturing techniques. This Chaise stands on a simple maple frame, which is crafted out of solid FSC-certified wood. A precursor to the modern platform bed, it is made with slats that permit air circulation through the cushion, and the bolster cushion is removable to create a larger surface for sleeping. An additional arm with bolster (sold separately) can be added to the foot of the Chaise. Made with removable covers for cleaning, the cushions are upholstered in fabric by Maharam, a family-run business that’s been producing textiles for more than 100 years. Made in U.S.A.

A Brazilian version of a Bauhaus classic, Paulo Mendes da Rocha¹s Paulistano
Chair (1957) is a piece that holds its own with the iconic cantilevered
armchairs from Alvar Aalto, Mart Stam, Mies van der Rohe and other European
classics. Details that make a difference are the signature of this
architect, who won the Pritzker Architecture Prize in 2006. Exceptionally
comfortable, the Paulistano flexes slightly and can be adjusted for upright
or relaxed sitting positions by shifting the sling up or down the frame. The
sling, or slipcover, is available in leather or fabric, the latter being a
limited-edition reversible cover (one side is floral, the other is striped)
by Rosita Missoni. The frame (sold separately) is a continuous 17-foot piece
of solid steel, shaped under 200 lbs of hydraulic pressure and welded in a
single spot. The frame is available in polished stainless steel or
phosphatized carbon steel. The Paulistano Chair was not available in the
U.S. market until 2006.

The Vega Collection (2005) provides a unique solution for environments used for socializing, lounging and sleeping. Created by designers Busk & Hertzog, Vega consists of a multifunctional Sofa, Chaise and Ottoman. When a larger Sofa is needed, the Chaise and Ottoman are ready to oblige; slide the pieces together to create the required size. Should a sectional be in order, two or more pieces can be quickly combined. For further flexibility, the arm of the sofa can be positioned on either side and changed on a whim. The Sofa and Chaise transform into comfortable sleepers by sliding the seats – which rest on metal bases with internal tracks – and folding down the arm of the Sofa or the back of the Chaise. Use a flat sheet for best fit. Choose either a cotton/linen blend (bark, brick, lichen, sandstone, slate) or wool (brown, cream, orange) fabric. Two down pillows are included with the Sofa and one with the Chaise. Made in Denmark.

A colorful, fun item with a serious purpose, the Miss Rio Ottoman (2003) is an eco-friendly design crafted out of a soft rubber made from recycled flip flops. In addition to keeping industrial leftovers out of landfills, Miss Rio repurposes the soft rubber without any further manufacturing. The raw material is used as is. Together with the Gueto Company, Karin Wittmann Wilsmann's design is manufactured by social organizations that provide work for otherwise unemployed craftspeople from the local community. A smart, ecological design, Miss Rio provides comfortable, firm seating and is suitable for outdoor use (although colors may fade if exposed to sunlight for extended periods). Honored as a finalist for a 2004 Premio Planeta Casa, or Home Planet Award, granted by Casa Claudia, a leading Brazilian magazine for architecture and interior design. Miss Rio was also recognized as a finalist for IF Design Award 2004, as well as the 2003/2004 Ecodesign Award sponsored by Fiesp/Ciesp, which encourages the use of design as means to conceive environmentally friendly products. Because the strips of EVA can be pulled out, caution is recommended for use around small children. Made in Brazil.

Niels Bendtsen’s Pool Table Collection (2004) is a juxtaposition of undisturbed flat water (like a table) and man-made squares and rectangles (like a pool). Highlighting these shapes are the green edges of the thick glass and reflections in the frosted or black tabletops. Pool’s tempered glass top and sides are permanently fused at mitered corners using a UV gluing process that offers rigid strength and a clean connection. Exposed edges are polished flat, making them smooth to the touch. The top’s color is silk-screened on the bottom of the panel and then baked to give a flawless and permanent hue. A variety of sizes offer several nesting possibilities, easily arranged to fit individual needs.

Verner Panton’s sense of playfulness in his designs belied the seriousness with which he approached his craft. Early in his career he worked with European modern design masters like Arne Jacobsen, Hans Wegner and Poul Henningsen, but by the 1960s, Panton had carved out his own niche. Psychedelic shapes and patterns and bright colors characterize much of his work, and his Illumesa Light Table (1970) is a bold example of his risk-taking approach to design. Part of his experimental work in plastics, Illumesa, which was reissued in 2004, can be used indoors or out, large enough to light a patio and serve as a compelling centerpiece. Crafted from acrylic, Illumesa is lightweight and has a bright yellow cord with ip44 wiring, for outdoor use.
Doron Lachisch’s Cubitec Shelving (2008) combines the exceptional strength and stability of injection-molded polypropylene with simple, modular design. With the new incarnation of Cubitec, we worked with Lachisch to create one system that can solve most storage dilemmas. Designed with a corrugated core, the shelving is superbly strong and lightweight, while optional Doors and Backs can transform the system into a concealed cabinet. Depending on your needs and the configurations of your space, Cubitec can be attached vertically or horizontally with enclosed hardware. One kit creates up to four shelves and each shelf holds up to 55 pounds. The new Cubitec is all about options: 10" or 13.25" deep shelves with open or concealed storage and a horizontal or vertical layout. Please note: the Cubitec and Cubits products we carried before 2008 will not be compatible with version. If you have questions about which Cubitec you already own, please call us at 1.800.944.2233.

Designed to create an elegantly understated backdrop for your books or decorative objects, the Index Bookcase (1997) is refined enough for even the most sophisticated home. It is a clean, simple structure with an open, lithe presence. The Index Bookcases are finished on both sides and are sized to function either as room dividers, while still giving the feeling of open space, or more traditionally, against a wall. The bookcase has adjustable glides for leveling on uneven surfaces. Simple assembly required. Made in Canada.

Most of the designers we know have fairly large book collections, and with that come storage space constraints. The Treku Shelving System has an architectural soundness and modularity that booklovers and designers alike can depend on. Working with basic principles of gravity, the wall-mounting design focuses all of its weight downward into the floor to hold hundreds of pounds without stressing the wall. Each system includes four wenge veneer shelves, which can be adjusted to any height for customized display and storage, and two aluminum profiles. The profiles feature discreet side channels with sliding brackets that screw into the shelves for a fixed position (brackets must be inserted into profiles prior to wall-mounting). This design allows for sturdy shelves that can adjust quickly and easily without the hassle of separate hardware. Additional shelving units can be added to the system at any time. Plastic leveling feet adjust for uneven floors. Because of the system's small, almost square footprint and height adjustable shelves, the Treku Shelves can efficiently accommodate objects large and small. Assembly required. Made in Spain.

Weight capacity per shelf is 110 lbs.

To further enhance the functionality of his Parallel Shelving (2005), Stephen Burks added optional Bookends. Available either in a two-sided U shape or one-sided L shape, the bookends can also be used to hold CDs, DVDs or anything that can benefit from a little support. Made of powder-coated steel, they come in three colors to boldly complement the oak or white Parallel Shelving units.
