Designed by Matt Carr and conceived with the same combination of utility and seductive attention to detail as his Rolly Storage Mirror, the Rolly Side Table forgoes traditional drawers for a drum top with sliding tambour door. Fusing new technology and natural materials, the sliding panel is constructed of walnut that's laser-cut and then laminated to a canvas backing to give the wood flexibility to round the corners. Niels Bendtsen’s Pool Table Collection (2004) is a juxtaposition of undisturbed flat water (like a table) and man-made squares and rectangles (like a pool). Highlighting these shapes are the green edges of the thick glass and reflections in the frosted or black tabletops. Pool’s tempered glass top and sides are permanently fused at mitered corners using a UV gluing process that offers rigid strength and a clean connection. Exposed edges are polished flat, making them smooth to the touch. The top’s color is silk-screened on the bottom of the panel and then baked to give a flawless and permanent hue. The "Little Helper" was a humanoid robot with a lightbulb for a head who first appeared in 1956 as an assistant to Gyro Gearloose, and sometimes even as an inventor himself. Rather than a moveable chair used with a stationary table, this is a moveable table to be used with a stationary chair, sofa or bed. The Little Friend is adjustable from a lap height of 20" up to 29" with the push of a button that operates an air-gas mechanism. Smartly designed with a single pedestal base, the table can be pulled as close as necessary, especially when the user sits with one leg on either side of the base. Plus, the axis is placed off center to maximize the amount of tabletop that's closest to the user's body. In a 1956 cover story in Time magazine, Eero Saarinen said he was designing a collection to "clear up the slum of legs in the U.S. home." Later that year, he completed his Pedestal Table and Tulip™ Chair Collection (1956) and obliterated the "slum" by creating a cast aluminum base inspired by a drop of high-viscosity liquid. If you combined the work of I.M. Pei and Eero Saarinen, the result might very well look like the Platner Collection (1966). Warren Platner worked with both of the industrial and organic design giants before turning his attention to steel wire furniture, for which he devised the structure and production method. Requiring as many as 1,000 welds and crafted out of wire and space, the Side Table demonstrates Platner's belief that there is room in modernism "for the kind of decorative, gentle, graceful design that appeared in a period style like Louis XV." Constructed of metal components that are finished in bright nickel with a clear lacquer protective coating, the table features a clear plastic extrusion ring surrounding the base to protect floors and ensure a level tabletop. Noguchi Prismatic Table

A former apprentice to Constantin Brancusi, midcentury master Isamu Noguchi was no stranger to working with metal. The aluminum Prismatic Table (1957), the last piece of furniture that Noguchi designed, is an example of his return to the medium in the 1950s, during which time he created both functional and fine arts objects out of metal sheeting. Evoking the Japanese art of origami, the table features carefully bent and folded angles that lend dimension and a sense of solidity to the design. Small but sturdy, it's a crisp and classic side or end table. This is the first time the three-legged version of the table has been produced, and is artfully manufactured by the Vitra Design Museum in collaboration with the Isamu Noguchi Foundation.
