Care & Maintenance

With regular care and maintenance, your Herman Miller product will provide many years of superior performance and satisfaction. To maintain quality, please follow the cleaning procedures outlined here.

The instructions for the care and maintenance of Herman Miller products are provided to you as a service. No warranty is implied since results may vary.

Base, Frame, and Arms

Normal cleaning
Wash coated metal surfaces with a soft cloth soaked in detergent and warm water; rinse thoroughly and dry. Remove scuff marks from low-gloss coatings with pre-softened paste wax, following the manufacturer's instructions. Remove scuff marks and scratches from high-gloss coatings using automotive polishing compounds, either liquid or paste. After polishing, apply a pre-softened automotive paste wax to restore original sheen.

Do not use abrasive, acid, alcohol–based, or solvent–based cleaners; they may damage the paint finish. For assistance in determining the appropriate color and gloss for Herman Miller touch-up paint, contact your Herman Miller Customer Service Representative.

Seat, Back, and Arm Pads

Normal cleaning
Wash plastic surfaces with a soft cloth soaked in mild detergent and warm water. Rinse thoroughly and dry with a soft cloth.

Do not use solvents or abrasive kitchen cleaners.

FLEXNET Suspension Seat

Normal cleaning
Vacuum fabric as needed using an upholstery attachment. Vacuuming picks up dust and reduces the need for professional cleaning.

Do not brush fabric or use a vacuum attachment with a rotary brush. Brushing may permanently damage the nap or change the character of the fabric.

Spot Cleaning
Immediately soak up the stain with a soft absorbent cloth.

Do not dry the stain completely or it may set. The longer a stain is allowed to remain on a fabric, the more difficult it is to remove.

Water-based stains such as coffee, soft drinks, fruit juices, or milk
Use a water-based cleaner (specifically made for cleaning fabric) or a solution of mild (alkaline) warm soapy water (not overly soapy) applied with a damp clean cloth or sponge. Work the cleaner into a lather or foam. Soak up all remaining solution and then use a clean cloth or sponge dipped in cool water to remove any residue.

Never use hot water; it will set the stain. Avoid scrubbing.

Oil-based stains such as lipstick, grease, or salad dressing
Use a dry cleaning solution applied with a damp clean cloth or sponge. Test the cleaning solution on a small, concealed area first. If there is no spotting, ringing, or damage to the fabric or its dyes, apply the cleaning solution to the soiled area with light, quick strokes. Begin at the outside of the stain and work toward the center, being careful not to over-saturate the fabric. K2R is also a product that can be used. See product label for complete instructions.

Do not over apply water or any liquid solution to fabric. Excessive wetting of the fabric with any liquid solution may result in permanent damage to the material. Do not rub too vigorously or you may damage the nap of the fabric or break fibers. Several light applications are better than one heavy application. Soak up all remaining solution and then use another clean cloth or sponge dipped in cool water to remove any residue. Let fabric dry thoroughly and then vacuum well before using. If the stain resists cleaning, contact a professional cleaner.

Large Areas
If large areas are soiled, contact a professional cleaning firm.

Surprisingly comfortable
This is a great chair. It's the standard desk chair in the dorms at my university and it's clear why. It's comfortable, extremely well made, stackable, and just makes sense for any education application.
I gave 4 stars because I sit for extended periods in my dorm while studying. Just a few hours in this chair and my rear is very tired with the solid plastic seat. The back support is great, however. I've encountered the mesh-seated chair in some places. It's similarly comfortable, but I have found the seam between the chair and the mesh uncomfortable where my legs meet the front of the chair.

Looks can be deceiving!
The design with the holes made me think of a nursing home chair that you wash your patients down in however this chair is extremely comfortable. It is super lightweight which is great for our patients to be able to pull out to use!

Very comfortable and good for back posture
Just got this chair, with the flexnet. My achy back molds nicely into the chair and results in good sitting posture . Chair looks good as well. Glad I purchased it.

This chair is very comfortable
We got these chairs for a communal workspace in our office. My employees love them! They are very comfortable and also look great. We got the flexnet bottom to ensure comfort over longer sitting periods. I love how customizable the chair is.

sooooo comfortable
I ordered these chairs for a computer lab when I was working; since I have retired I ordered one for myself for my drafting desk. These chairs are incredibilly comfortable, sturdy, and give terrific support for your back, and are so easy to keep clean! I would recommend these to anyone who needs a great chair for a desk. Absolutely perfect! and design is great; less is more!

Quality Products
I recently purchased two Caper chairs and am completely satisfied. The design, color options, comfort, and customer service are "First Class"! These chairs are built to order so don't expect them overnight. The wait is absolutely worth it.

Two splendid chairs
Caper Chairs abound at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago where I teach. I am always pleased to place my rear in one. So I decided to order one for myself at home. Wonderful, but after a while my extra wide butt chafed a bit at the edges of the hard seat, so I ordered one that has the softer seat with mesh material that provides exactly the extra comfort I need. My wife, with her narrower bottom, has taken over my original firmer one, preferring its stability and comfort over her old tilty office chair. The wheels on these chairs afford one all the mobility and swivelability of a standard office chair. Excellent.
