Charles and Ray Eames thrived on collaborations with creative partners like textile master Alexander Girard. In this spirit, Herman Miller partnered with the Danish company HAY to bring a fresh twist to the Eames Sofa Compact (1954). Rolf and Mette Hay cite the Eameses’ experimental yet rigorous approach as a model for their own process. Their choice of fabric to inspire a new look for this Eames classic was Alexander Girard’s striped Jacobs Coat. A wool blend made by Maharam, this colorful textile is upholstered on plush foam cushions supported by resilient webbing, resulting in firm but flexible comfort.
