Founded 1902 (New York, New York)
Founded in 1902 by Louis Maharam, a Russian immigrant, New York-based Maharam is known worldwide for its comprehensive collection of textiles. Starting with a single pushcart, Maharam evolved into a supplier of theatrical materials for costume and set design in the 1940s, to a pioneer of the contract textile industry in the 1960s, to one of today’s leading providers of textiles to architects and interior designers. With a portfolio spanning designs from 20th-century visionaries to those in the contemporary avant-garde, Maharam is represented in MoMA’s permanent collection, among other museums.
