Team player
The Eames Aluminum Group Collection (1958) began as a special project for Eero Saarinen and Alexander Girard, who needed seating for a home they were designing for industrialist J. Irwin Miller in Columbus, Indiana. The pair asked the Eameses to design light, mobile leisure chairs. At the time, Charles and Ray were exploring ways to use aluminum, which had been strengthened, refined and made more affordable since WWII. So, they constructed a lightweight, die-cast aluminum frame and set a sling in it – a “sitting pocket,” as they called it, which subtly conformed to the body’s shape. This completely new type of seat marked a departure from the idea of a chair as solid shell.
Constructed of 61% recycled materials, the Eames Aluminum Group Chair is backed by a 12-year manufacturer’s warranty. It’s also 88% recyclable at the end of its useful life. This is an authentic Eames chair by Herman Miller. Made in the U.S.A.

Charles and Ray Eames
Design is for living. That maxim shaped a widespread shift in design during the 1940s and '50s. It was a revolution of form, an exciting visual language that signaled a new age and a fresh start – and two of its prime movers were Charles and Ray Eames. This husband-and-wife team's unique synergy led to a whole new look in furniture. Lean and modern. Sleek and simple. Beautifully functional.

beautiful, functional and comfortable though pricey
I am very happy with this chair. The design is elegant and the height adjustment feature is easy to use (though I would love something with a bit more height range). It is well built and seems like it will be long lasting. Is it worth the cost? Not so sure about that. There are other equally beautiful and comfortable chairs out there that I suspect are as well made and sturdy as this one but lower in cost. I did not want to spend an eternity comparison shopping and I was pretty confident I would be happy with this one, so this was a splurge. Even at the DWR "sale" price, this was a lot for a sensible, attractive chair. I thought the Eames philosophy was partly based on good design for the masses (like the name of DWR implies), and this price makes somewhat of a mockery of that. But if the cost is not an issue for others, I can say that I am otherwise happy with this purchase.
