As a stylist for a furniture design company, Sam Bigio struggled to find beautifully sculpted ceramic planters for his projects. It was as if planters had stopped being seeing as designed objects, and Bigio wanted to change that conversation. In 2017 he founded the Oregon-based ceramics studio Monstruosus, which takes its name from a naturally occurring mutant form of cacti. Every handcrafted glazed earthenware Monstruosus Planter (2017) is individually formed using a slip-cast mold, then shaved and sculpted on a potter’s wheel before being sponged to achieve a refined texture. Suitable for use indoors and out, this Planter does not have a drainage hole. Avoid freezing temperatures to prevent cracking, and refrain from using abrasive cleaners to preserve exterior glaze. With a nod to its name, the Monstruosus Planter comes with a package of cactus seeds. Made in U.S.A.
