Before George Nelson joined Herman Miller
as design director in 1945, he was a trained
architect who had distinguished himself as
a writer and editor – and like all great editors,
he had an instinct for what belonged and what
didn’t. That clarity of vision is what inspired
Herman Miller founder D.J. De Pree to offer him
the role, despite Nelson having no furniture
design experience.
That turned out not to matter. Nelson brought
the same wide-angle thinking to furniture that
he’d applied to the page. The Thin Edge Bed,
with its razor-slim frame and customizable
options, is just one example of his core belief:
that good design wasn’t about dream-house
idealism but about finding ingenious solutions
for how people actually live.
Nelson’s contributions to Herman Miller
extended beyond his own work. As design
director, he surveyed the landscape for talent
and pulled in designers like Charles and Ray
Eames, Alexander Girard, and Isamu Noguchi –
names that would go on to define midcentury
modernism and make Herman Miller its most
storied address.
