Stunningly sculpted —
With the beautiful symmetry of a butterfly's wings, the graceful Yanagi Butterfly Stool, designed by Sori Yanagi in 1954, marries ancient Japanese forms with modern Western materials.
Details
Museum-worthy iconic design
The gently curving lines of the Yanagi Butterfly Stool, like a butterfly poised for flight, show the beauty that the pressed plywood molding technique invented by Charles and Ray Eames can produce. The stool now resides in the Museum of Modern Art and Metropolitan Museum of Art, among other fine museums worldwide. It’s made of maple or palisander wood. Simple assembly required.

Sori Yanagi
With his designs, Sori Yanagi achieved significantly more than the bridging of East and West. Active in the post-World War II era, he created pieces that embodied the optimism of the new industrial age without losing the delicacy and lightness that is so indicative of traditional Japanese design.
