Max Lamb's 005 Lounge Chair (2011) is a paradox, offering a "hard-as-nails" first impression that gives way to visual softness and unexpected comfort. The British designer's investigation into Finnish pine – how it's grown, sawn, and sold – informed a logical approach of assembling off-the-shelf lumber into block-like forms. Hand-scooped convex recesses carved from geometric volumes reveal characterful grain patterns, and as the sustainably harvested heartwood and sapwood mature at different speeds, they develop rich honey tones that reveal stories of life well-lived. Made in Finland.
