The Bower Rug (2025) by Dutch industrial designer Edith van Berkel for Maharam takes an unexpected approach to plant-fiber weaving. Their collaboration pairs wild-harvested nettle – naturally watered by monsoon rains – with lustrous Chinese silk accents in striking colors. The traditional weave showcases nettle's inherent variation, with one border featuring a textured soumak weave with silk stitching and the opposite displaying continuous rows of contrasting silk. Van Berkel's process-oriented approach honors traditional techniques while achieving minimal environmental impact. Made in Nepal.
