Laid-back sophistication — Milo Baughman believed that good design is enduring design. A pioneer of the California modern movement, he created furniture that was clean-lined, sophisticated and easy to live with. His recliner offers elegant ease within a sleek profile, opening with a slight seated push for stretch-out comfort.

“Furniture that is too obviously designed is very interesting,” said designer Milo Baughman, “but too often belongs only in museums.” A firm believer that good design can have a positive influence in our lives, Baughman knew how to design sophisticated, sexy chairs – even when it came to a recliner. Recognized as one of the originators of the California modern movement, Baughman began his career as a custom furniture designer, and in 1953 he joined forces with Thayer Coggin, the founder of the North Carolina company that is still the exclusive manufacturer of Baughman’s work. For five decades, Baughman designed clean, sophisticated and easy-to-live-with furniture, and we worked closely with Thayer Coggin to bring his Recliner 74 (1966) back into production. Baughman’s work was included in High Styles: Twentieth Century American Design at the Whitney Museum of American Art in 1985. In 1987, he was inducted into the Furniture Design Hall of Fame. Made in U.S.A.

Milo Baughman

“Furniture that is too obviously designed,” said Milo Baughman, “is very interesting, but too often belongs only in museums.” In Baughman’s struck an ideal modernist balance. Using the consummate midcentury-modern materials, he created a new visual vocabulary, built on the legacy of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Marcel Breuer, but infused with the style and ease of the American West Coast.

A tall woman’s new binge chair
It was a thrill to find that the Milo Baughman recliner was still in production. I had been looking for a vintage chair, and was delighted to buy new instead. The chair is perfect for a long-legged 5’11” female, who likes a firm seat and back. When the chair is in the seated recline position, it is perfect for reading. The full recline position does not lock in place, so it feels a bit tenuous. If it had the full recline lock, this chair would be a five. The poppy boucle fabric has great vibrancy, and life. The style is perfect mixed in with my other vintage mid century Scandinavian furniture. I’d highly recommend it.
