Artist Scott Sueme
When Scott Sueme was growing up, he found his way to art through skateboarding and graffiti. He studied fine art in college but left to start a career as a graphic designer. About five years ago, he decided to return to painting full-time. He is now represented by Uprise Art and his works are part of an exclusive collection offered by DWR.
Scott shares a studio in Vancouver with two other artists, which he’s set up so he can move fluidly between a large workbench where he builds the wooden panels he paints on; a moveable island where he mixes his paints on the glass top and keeps supplies; and his computer, where he experiments with composition.
“The lines between digital and analog are very blurred for me,” explains Scott. “I might start a painting, then bring it into Photoshop, then go back to painting. You can try out things quickly in a digital space and let it help you arrive at the finished work.”
Despite his facility with digital tools, Scott’s most prized tool is his paintbrush. “It’s the most important ingredient in the whole thing. It’s like your golf bag, you add to your collection over time. Caring for my brushes is very important to me, so they last as long as possible. Building the wood panels I paint on and sealing them, treating the materials with respect – it’s all part of the vocation of making art.”
