Additional Information

Hailed by Time magazine as the Best Design of the 20th Century, the iconic LCW or “Lounge Chair Wood” (1946) began as an experiment in the Eameses’ apartment, where they were molding plywood in what they called the “Kazam! Machine.” The machine pressed thin sheets of wood veneer against a heated membrane that was inflated by a bicycle pump. Humble beginnings for what would become one of the world’s most widely recognized and highly coveted chairs. Low-slung, with an expertly crafted molded seat and back (no bike pumps are used today), this chair cradles you in a comfortable position while rubber shock mounts buffer against jarring movement. This original is an authentic product of Herman Miller®, Inc. Eames is a licensed trademark of Herman Miller. Made in U.S.A.

Design is for living. That maxim shaped a widespread shift in design during the 1940s and 1950s. It was a revolution of form, an exciting visual language that signaled a new age and a fresh start – and two of its prime movers were Charles and Ray Eames. The Eameses were a husband-and-wife team whose unique synergy led to a whole ...

Care and Assembly

View Instructions
Care & Maintenance With regular care and maintenance, your Herman Miller product will provide many years of superior performance and satisfaction. To maintain quality, please follow the cleaning procedures outlined here. The instructions for the care and maintenance of Herman Miller products are provided to you as a service. No warranty is implied since results may vary. Wood & Veneer This includes Herman Miller products finished with wood veneer or recut wood veneer, except the oiled Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman with Rosewood, Oiled Walnut, or Oiled Santos Palisander veneer unless specifically noted. Normal Cleaning Dust regularly with a slightly damp, soft, lint-free cloth. Wipe dry with a dry, soft cloth in the directionof the wood grain.Spills should be immediately wiped up with a damp cloth. Once a month Clean the surface with a soft cloth dampened with a quality cleaner formulated for wood furniture. Wipe the surface in the direction of the wood grain to remove dirt and fingerprints. Wipe dry with a clean, dry cloth. Twice a year Apply a good quality furniture polish with a soft cloth. Do not use aerosol-powered cleaners or polishes. Also, do not use polishes containing waxes or abrasives, or polishes that are oil based. Stains Herman Miller veneers meet strict testing standards for resistance to wear, light, stains, water, and pressure. To reduce the risk of damage, take some precautions: Use coasters for glasses and mugs. If a glass top is added to the veneer surface, be sure it rests on felt pads. Don’t place a potted plant on a veneer surface unless it’s in a water-tight container or in a drip tray.Don’t let vinyl binders stay on a surface for very long. Use protective pads under equipment with “rubber” cushioning feet. Some chemical compounds used in the feet on office equipment, such as printers and monitor stands, may leave permanent stains or marks. Minor repair of water rings, stains, and scratches Rub the surface lightly in the direction of the wood grain using No. 000 steel wool. Apply a scratch-removing polish with a color and value that simulate the veneer. If the scratches are deep, consult a professional furniture refinisher. Other Damage Wood is susceptible to bruising and scratching from heavy office equipment, so we encourage a protective surface is placed underneath. Objects should be lifted instead of dragged across a surface. Protective pads should be used under items with a rough bottom, like pottery. Denting, caused by extreme pen pressure when writing, can also damage veneer. Use desk pads or some other protection where a lot of paperwork is done. Sunlight can damage veneer as well, so veneer surfaces should not be in direct sunlight. To help a surface age evenly, users can periodically move items on their desks so that the entire surface is exposed to an even amount of light over time. In addition to light, extremely high or low humidity is a damaging environmental factor. Herman Miller suggests maintaining a relative humidity of 35-65 percent. Seating Fabrics For normal cleaning, vacuum upholstery fabric as needed, using an upholstery attachment. If further cleaning is needed, dry-clean or spot clean fabric with solvent cleaner. Do not brush fabric or use a vacuum attachment with a rotary brush. Brushing may permanently damage the nap or change the character of the fabric. Do not apply water or any liquid solution. Wetting the fabric with any liquid solution may result in permanent damage.

More comfortable than it looks
A true design classic that will shine in any room. A surprisingly small footprint which is great for tight spaces. It’s also more comfortable than it looks, and the back rest offers proper lumbar support.

Classic design and comfort
Beautifully designed piece of sculpture, that is comfortable to sit it. Great accent for the room corner, and pulled over when needed for social gatherings. Solid construction.

I hope my home is worthy of such a beautiful chair!
I was so excited when this chair was delivered! The only thing I worried about is would it seat an adult comfortably, while being sturdy. Well, it is not only beautiful, but is is very comfortable, and yes (!) it was sturdy!!!! The sales lady, Was extremely nice on the phone, and made ordering easy. I was giving notifications about delivery. Would buy again!!!

Great Design & Scale
The chair is beautifully designed and extremely well-made. It is also light enough to be easily moved. What I appreciate the most is that it is scaled for apartment living. It provides comfort, visual appeal and leaves plenty of floor space for smaller environments.

I own two of them!
Fantastic classic chairs! I have one in cherry and a second in walnut. They are comfortable to sit on and beautiful to look at. My only gripe is with the veneer on the walnut chair. The wood has a strange pattern. I considered returning it but decided to keep it.

These chairs are a piece of American design history and are wonderful to own like all Eames products. You won't be disappointed.

The most comfortable chair in the house
This chair was a gift. I first liked the color and design (I have the red version), then when I sat in it, was very surprised by just how comfortable it is - by far the best chair in the house!

Looks hot, feels bad
Eames was very good at creating uncomfortable seating, without fully embracing engineering and form. This well recognized chair is interesting and hip, but, oh, so, uncomfortable. No one, looking to relax after a long day, would feel releif in this chair. It is hard to sit on hard surfaces for very long, and without pads or cushions, this chair will only act as a statue, not a functional piece. Great for stagers!

Timeless and endlessly comfortable
This is genuinely an unbelievably comfortable chair. To look at it's such a fantastic design, but to sit in is to really appreciate the brilliance. From experience myself, as well as guests of all shapes and sizes, the comfort is unbeatable for something so small, light and un-upholstered.

It sits quite low to the floor and lets you stretch out your legs. The seat and back 'float' on rubber shocks that allow them to flex to accommodate your posture and movements. I sit in our LCWs to read on occasion, the lack of armrests makes it difficult to truly lounge in, but with my arms occupied by a book, the rest of my body remains very comfortable.

The construction is very stable and solid, but the chair is light and easy to move around. We use our pair of hair-hide LCWs from Herman Miller's 2009 Select program in our formal living room and our cherry LCW as an accent all over the house.

I previously purchased a LCW chair and I'm wondering if cushions can be purchased after the fact and added to the chair?
Annie C on Nov 13, 2019

Yes, cushions can be added to the Eames Molded Plywood Lounge Chair after the fact, we would recommend taking a look at the cushion section on our website (https://www.dwr.com/search?lang=en_US&q=cushion) for some options. The chair can also be reupholstered to add cushions if you would like a more permanent option.
Is there a weight or load maximum capacity?
KEVIN B on Nov 16, 2019
BEST ANSWER: The manufactures recommend weight limit for the Eames Molded Plywood Lounge Chair is approximately 300 pounds, we have noted that customers have been able to go slightly above the weight limit without issue.
