Additional Information

Description

George Nelson’s Platform Bench (1946) is one of the great icons of midcentury modernism. For Herman Miller’s influential design director, utility was as important as beauty, and his spare rectangular bench is the result of this belief. It serves equally well as table, platform base or seating, depending on need and situation. No wonder it’s been called timeless; something this functional never dates. The chrome legs have a slender profile; also available with wood legs. Ships with legs unattached; simple assembly required. This is the authentic Nelson Bench produced by Herman Miller. Made in U.S.A.

  • Constructed with solid maple or walnut, this piece showcases the natural variations in wood; slight color differences from slat to slat should be expected

George Nelson

U.S.A. (1908–1986)

Possessing one of the most inventive minds of the 20th century, George Nelson was the rare person who can envision what isn’t there yet. Nelson described his creative abilities as a series of “zaps” – flashes of inspiration and clarity that he turned into innovative design ideas.

One such “zap” came in 1942, when Nelson conceived the first-ever pedestrian shopping mall – ...

A timeless, functional, elegant classic
I replaced a big and heavy Noguchi Coffee Table with a Nelson bench and could not be happier. While it's meant to be a bench that you sit on, It looks great as a coffee or accent table, and is much easier to move should I want to temporarily pull out the sofabed or just reconfigure my living room for entertaining.

This is an elegant, classic and timeless piece that has never and will not likely ever go out of style. I will always have at least one of these originals in an appropriate length (not the more recent updated design) in any future homes.

A bench of quiet intensity.
The bench arrived as described. I sat in it before at a HM dealer and found it to be a great addition to the home. What I love about this bench is the height of the seat is about as perfect. But when looks closely, the wood is joined together with such detail and the wood slates are beyond smooth, so the design also makes a great coffee table because the lines are flawless. It is very stable and strong so there is nothing flimsy about it. We are using it as a bench once you enter our studio loft. The bench isn't super comfortable without the bench cushion, but then again, we use it as a seat when we put on our shoes and articles of clothing once we enter or leave our house from the stairway.

The greatest design of the 20th Century.
I own three originals (two 72" and one 48") from Zeeland, Michigan. Handed down from my parents.
