Description

Bench, table or both?

George Nelson’s Platform Bench (1946) is one of the greatest icons of midcentury modernism. For Herman Miller’s influential design director, utility was as important as beauty, and his spare rectangular bench is a result of this belief. Originally designed for his own office, where Nelson hoped the slatted top would discourage visitors from sitting too long, this piece serves equally well as bench or table, depending on need and situation, and can be ganged together to create one long bench or one extra wide table. No wonder it’s been called timeless: Something this functional never dates. The Platform Bench’s wood legs are ebonized and finger-jointed for superior strength; also available with metal legs. This is the authentic Nelson Bench produced by Herman Miller. Made in U.S.A.

A true one of a kind.

Constructed of solid wood, this piece showcases natural grain variations; slight color differences from slat to slat should be expected. Ships with base unattached; simple assembly required.

  • Solid wood construction with an airy slatted top.
  • Originally designed for George Nelson’s own office.
  • Serves equally well as bench or table.
  • Exposed contrasting joinery.

One such “zap” came in 1942, when Nelson conceived the first-ever pedestrian shopping mall – ...

Underpriced and a real bargain
Very under-priced and beautiful item. Should be at least 10x the listed price for this elegant furniture composed of glued wood.

Gorgeous
The Nelson Platform Bench is a statement piece in my entry. It is also very comfortable to sit on and can be used as a table as well -- but I don't use it for either because it is much too beautiful and I don't want to damage it.

Work of art!
I could not feed my children for five months but at least they had a beautiful place to sit and starve.
