Founded in Michigan in 1866, Woodard Furniture Company has long shaped the evolution of outdoor furniture. In 1956, it introduced the Sculptura Chair – an iron mesh design by Russell Woodard that unified craft with modernism through its commanding form. Russell Woodard

A family-run business since 1866, Woodard has reinvented itself many times over, but in 1956 the Michigan-based company became a pioneer in modernism with the handcrafted Sculptura chair. Attributed to Russell Woodard, the now-iconic design was the first sculpted chair made without molds, earning it a spot in the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum’s permanent collection in 1994.
