EVENTS Modern Phoenix Week
Events on April 1, 9 and 10
DWR celebrates our city’s modern roots.
It’s no secret that Phoenix is a hotspot—no pun intended—for mid-century modern and contemporary architectural design. This year, Modern Phoenix Week showcases the work of Arizona architect Alfred Newman Beadle, as well as the bustling Expo at the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts. A schedule of DWR-sponsored events follows:
Thursday, April 1, 5:30pm cocktails, 6:30pm presentation
Alfred Beadle slideshow presented by architect Michael P. Johnson (www.mpjstudio.com), on behalf of Gnosis Ltd. Beadle (1927–1998) designed and built a wide range of projects, mostly in and around Phoenix, transforming the desert with a modern architecture carefully integrated into the landscape. In addition to dozens of residences, Beadle designed numerous banks, hotels, restaurants, and apartment buildings. For this night only, purchase the out-of-print Beadle book Constructions: Buildings in Arizona (www.gnosisltd.org/constructions) for $25 and beadlearchitecture documentary DVD for $25, or $40 for both. Wine and refreshments will be served. RSVP by March 30 to scottsdale@dwr.com.
Friday, April 9, 5:30pm cocktails, 6:30pm presentation
Marshall Shore Retro Spectacular
The Valley’s funkiest Information Curator™, aka Marshall Shore, will take armchair tourists on a rollicking illustrated ride through Arizona during its mid-century heyday. Shore’s presentation celebrates unique people and architecture in a theatrical blend of images and storytelling. Wine and refreshments will be served. RSVP by April 8 to scottsdale@dwr.com.
Saturday, April 10, 11am-5pm
DWR Photo Lounge at the Modern Phoenix Expo
We’ll be at the Modern Phoenix Expo (www.modernphoenix.net/hometour), a bustling Modern Market on the light-flooded floor of the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts atrium. Purple Nickel Studio (www.purplenickel.com) will be snapping shots in the DWR Photo Lounge of you test-driving your favorite classic modern furniture. Don’t miss the debut of the VKG Terrace Collection designed by Hendrik Van Keppel and Taylor Green, and the illuminated Chester Collection by Italian designers Raffaella Mangiarotti and Matteo Bazzicalupo.
