Details

Alexander Girard was the director of design for Herman Miller’s textile division from 1952 to 1973. Toward the end of his tenure, he was asked to add an element of “aesthetic functionalism” to Herman Miller’s very first open-plan office system, called Action Office. He responded with more than 40 images for the Environmental Enrichment Panel (1972) project. Each includes a preattached wooden dowel for easy hanging.

Alexander Girard

During his career, Alexander Girard energized the furniture designs of Herman Miller with a new, vibrant color palette and an oeuvre of folk-inspired textiles. He was the first modern designer to define textiles as being more than just functional and to further emphasize form through the application of color and pattern.
