After being schooled in industrial design and engineering at the Royal College of Art and Imperial College in London, Michael Anastassiades founded his own studio in 1994. His work falls somewhere in between the industrial and sculptural, especially in how he’s able to reduce a shape down to its bare essentials. This purity of form can be seen in the minimal Pillar Bed (2019), with posts that are high enough to define the space without overwhelming the room. “The posts are there as a gesture,” says Anastassiades. “Similarly, the brass detail feels luxurious and helps frame the mattress, which is the focus of the bed at the end of the day.” Made in Canada.

Michael Anastassiades

Michael Anastassiades’ work, with its focus on proportion and material honesty, celebrates the physical presence and enduring quality of an object. “What makes an object survive time?” he wonders. “Can it become more beautiful as it ages?”
