Danish design continuously redefined The Carl Hansen & Søn story began when Danish cabinetmaker Carl Hansen opened a small furniture workshop. Since then, the company’s success has depended on two core ideas: an uncompromising commitment to fine craftsmanship, and alliances with exceptional designers who reinvent and refine the concept of modern design.
The Carl Hansen & Søn story began in 1908, when Danish cabinetmaker Carl Hansen opened a small furniture workshop on the Danish island of Funen. Since then, the company’s success has depended on two core ideas: an uncompromising commitment to the finest craftsmanship, and alliances with exceptional designers who continually reinvent and refine the concept of modern design. Today, Carl Hansen & Søn chairs, tables and sofas complete many of the most exciting, beautiful and daring modern spaces – from restaurants to meeting spaces, hotels, homes and airports. Current CEO and grandson of Carl Hansen, Knud Erik Hansen, has said of the company, “Timeless beauty, comfort, craftsmanship, and sustainability are so deeply ingrained in all our furniture works that only sight and touch are required to understand and fall in love with them.”
Carl Hansen & Søn’s evolution has been deeply influenced by a long-term relationship with Hans J. Wegner. The creative partnership began in 1949, when Carl Hansen’s son Holger Hansen took a chance on the then-unknown designer, and Wegner developed a successful furniture series that included the now-iconic Wishbone Chair. Today, Carl Hansen & Søn continues to work closely with the Hans J. Wegner Studio and is the world’s largest producer of Wegner’s furniture.
Deeply ingrained in the work of Carl Hansen & Søn designers is the idea that great design and sustainable production are inseparable. Carl Hansen & Søn is certified to produce FSC®-certified furniture (FSC-C135991) and works continuously to ensure healthy, safe work conditions for its craftspeople, using only responsibly sourced, safe materials to protect customers and the environment. From investing in the most modern and energy efficient equipment to setting annual targets for reducing the amount of energy they use in production, Carl Hansen & Søn makes every effort to minimize its footprint, striving to leave behind nothing but beautiful furniture and a legacy of uncompromising craftsmanship.
