Types of Vases
Blown Glass Vases
A hand-blown glass vase is a statement-making piece, complete with all the unique and compelling imperfections of a one-of-a-kind sculpture. Glass vases are gorgeous pieces of decor that can come in a wide variety of colors, shapes, and textures, with blown glass vases being some of the most unique and sought after. An ideal dining table vase, glass vases can even sometimes be used as pitchers or decanters from which to serve beverages.
Sculptural Vases
Similarly, a sculpture vase can be a conversation piece. Often crafted from ceramic or porcelain, these are designed in beautiful (and sometimes unusual) sculptural silhouettes that can lend visual appeal to your space. Choose this type if you’re looking for a coffee table vase.
Stem Vases
While all vases can be used to display flowers, some are uniquely designed to house singular flower stems. Stem vases can be very short and squat, with a super small opening for a single flower stem, or tall and narrow, perfect for longer stems. This type of table flower vase is especially eye-catching on a dining table or living room side table.
Ikebana Vases
Perfect for flower arrangement enthusiasts, ikebana vases are shallow dishes with small spikes or slots lining their insides. Those small spikes are designed to hold stems in place to facilitate precise flower arrangement and positioning. Ikebana vases are named after ikebana, the Japanese art of floral arrangement, and can be great segues into a new hobby.
Metal Vases
Unconventional yet visually stunning, metal vases are every bit as sculptural as their glass and ceramic counterparts. Many metal vases are made of aluminum or steel that has been powder coated to prevent damage from exposure to moisture.
Choosing Modern Vases
A table vase is equally decorative and functional. It can be used to showcase a bouquet of fresh flowers, or, depending on its shape and construction, it can be used as a serving pitcher. Decorative flower vases will instantly enhance any space, including a kitchen counter or entryway credenza. Choose a mid-century modern vase to display greenery atop a rectangular walnut dining table. To decorate a living room cocktail table, arrange a grouping of small contemporary vases.
To decorate a long dining table, arrange three small vases down the middle of the table’s surface. If you have a square or circular dining table, position a large vase in the center. Small or medium vases are ideal for a living room cocktail table or credenza since they won’t overwhelm the surface area. Really, you can’t go wrong deciding where to put a vase. Think of them as the chameleons of interior design: they go with everything.
