Additional Information

Danish designer Børge Mogensen worked as a cabinetmaker before studying furniture design at the Danish School of Arts and Crafts and training as an architect at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. He worked for Kaare Klint for a decade before being named the director of FDB Møbler in 1942. FDB, which stood for Fællesforeningen for Danmarks Brugsforeninger (Joint Society for Danish Association of Users), was a food cooperative established in 1896 with the aim of ensuring affordable food prices for its members. In the 1930s, it expanded into furniture with the goal of using innovative industrial production methods to provide affordable, well-designed furniture to the Danish public. It was during Mogensen’s tenure at FDB – a post he held until 1950 – that he designed the J41 Side Chair (1940s), which is now produced by the Danish design collective HAY. FDB revolutionized the furniture industry and set the stage for many of the design icons that Denmark is known for today. The timeless J41 Chair features a slightly slanted backrest and widely spaced spindles, delivering comfort and a clean aesthetic. Made in China.
